Google recently updated their algorithm to penalize certain websites that were purchasing inbound links from unscrupulous SEO providers. I have never been a fan of loading up, so-to-speak, on external links in very short periods of time. Here is why:
- The amount of external links your website receives each day is recorded. When this frequency severely deviates from it’s homeostatic baseline, it is recorded by Google, and red alarms go off. Why? This is because this website is using online steroids which probably will not have the hard-earned muscle (content) online users are searching for. The less relevant Google searches become, the more likely people will visit other search engines.
- It’s extremely easy to just purchase external links and watch as your search engine rankings improve. However, if this is tolerated by Google, more and more website owners will focus on elements that only contribute to their success and not Google’s. As it become a question of money to get to the top of Google, organically, rather than hard earned content, PPC (pay-per-click) advertising will become obsolete.
- Google has said from the very beginning that purchasing “paid links” can lead to penalization:
“Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results. Not all paid links violate our guidelines. Buying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web when done for advertising purposes, and not for manipulation of search results.”
The trick to ranking high organically on Google is updating content regularly, researching good keywords and using them strategically, and becoming useful enough that as many websites as possible link back to you. That’s about it, minus all of the technical mumbo-jumbo that takes entire seminars to explain. Good luck to you.
